Grand County Democrats Work for Residents

We’re on your side

Residents of Moab and Grand County face challenges ranging from a shortage of affordable housing to a lack of jobs that pay enough to actually live here.  With Arches and Canyonlands National Parks in our backyard, it’s not surprising that tourism is our biggest economic driver. But tourism and our economy need to work for everyone.

The Grand County Democratic Party is standing up to outside and special interests that put the bottom line of investors and second home owners over our quality of life and needs of residents and workers.

We are committed to putting residents first and making Moab a sustainable and great place to live, work, raise a family, and enjoy the friendliness of small-town life.

Platform

The Grand County Democratic Party is open to all who share our fundamental values. We believe that our shared humanity transcends our differences, and that all who make Grand County their home deserve a voice, a vote, and to live safe, healthy lives as a part of our small but special community. We will work together toward a better county for everyone.

Quality of life

We prioritize residents' quality of life, including peaceful, healthy neighborhoods, safe streets and pathways, and community-focused infrastructure and planning. Too often residents and local families are asked to sacrifice their health, safety, and well-being for the sake of outside interests.

Housing

We believe that everyone deserves safe and affordable shelter and that Grand County's success hinges on our residents' ability to attain secure housing. Grand County Democrats support efforts in the public and private sector to provide and protect affordable housing that supports a viable workforce and a vibrant community. We believe that it is the role of local government to provide and support housing solutions whenever possible.

Public lands

Grand County's economy, quality of life, and identity depend on the health and responsible management of our public lands. We support keeping public lands in public ownership and managing them through responsible stewardship that protects vibrant landscapes, clean air and water, cultural resources, recreation, and appropriate economic uses. We believe the County and City should be constructive partners with federal and Tribal governments, working collaboratively to ensure that public land decisions reflect sound science, local knowledge, and the long-term interests of Grand County.

Education

A quality public education system is fundamental to democracy and an essential investment in our future. Our community identity and economic vitality depend on the skills, creativity, problem-solving, and leadership abilities of present and future generations. A high-quality public education must be accessible to all.

Economy

We believe that all deserve the peace of mind brought by economic security. As Democrats, we support economic development that leads to prosperity for all. This means an equitable economy that works for everyone: pathways to good jobs with wages high enough to support a family and allow our young people to stay in our community. We believe that government should be financially responsible by making and following  a balanced budget that aligns with community priorities.

Water

We understand that water on the Colorado Plateau is a finite resource, and we support planning for, and conservation of, our limited water to support resident housing, sound economic development, food security, pleasant landscapes, and flowing creeks and springs.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure is a foundation of our community, and we support investment in cost effective and timely maintenance. New development should not place financial burdens on existing residents. Transportation networks should be safe for motorized and non-motorized use. Updating and actively maintaining flood control infrastructure is a high priority as we experience more severe storms.
